Fraggle puppet build (hand and rod)

Starting with the basics I don’t have pictures of anything prior to this but I’ll explain the process: I first started out by cutting out 2 claw-like shapes out of fleece, kind of like this : I stitched both sides together using the henson stitch. Then I cut the same shape out of 0.5’’ upholstery foam and adhered the two sides using contact cement. Once I’d got the head shape, I started on the mouth plate. I traced around both sides of the mouth on the foam head onto a plastic tupperware lid and carefully cut the shapes out , roughened them up and glued them to the foam head. This was a mistake, however, because I forgot to sew the elastic grip inside.. Oops! I could have ripped the mouthplate off to do it except I didn’t want to chance damaging the head, so I decided it would be best to sew it on with the mouthplate still attached. Tula Hoob (Live hands puppet)

This whole project has been pretty experimental but its definitely been a learning curve!! (I'm not treating it as a proper replica, more as a fun project: then if I try the same build later on, when I'm more experienced, I can compare the results) I started off by crafting a full-size model head  with newspaper and sellotape.  (Not the best technique, I know but I had lots of sellotape that I wasn't sure what to do with and no pva glue: still, it seemed to work.) Once I felt I had the right shape, after looking at lots of reference images, I decided it was time to pattern the head. I covered the head with duct tape and drew the lines in wherever it folded. Then, I cut out along the parts I'd marked and carefully peeled off the pattern peices and stuck them onto some newspaper and cut around those shapes. Artie the axolotl (Hand and rod puppet)

  First I tested out the estimated pattern by making a mini EVA foam head. This helped me work out what was wrong and fix the pattern accordingly. While i still had easy access the the inside of the head, I marked up where the mouthplate was going to go. The mouthplate itself is made from a flexible plastic chopping board, which seems to work really well!! I saw someone use elastic to make a mouthplate so  I decidec to try it out for this build. (The head plug is now in) Shaping the body I had the basic shape of the body but I knew I wanted the body to be kind of a bean shape, so it needed Shaping some more. I added an extra layer to the top of the mouth to define it better and make it sturdier. The mouthplate is now properly attached but the eyes aren't . (1st attempt) I already attached the fleece to the body but the seams looked pretty bad so I started again.
